The Favela Removal Project of Duque de Caxias: A Perspective from Urban Geography

Abstract

Next, the current scenario of the Vila Ideal favela, located in Duque de Caxias – RJ, will be presented. Initially, facts about the favela removal project that occurs and may occur in this location will be discussed, followed by an overview of the emergence of favelas in Rio de Janeiro, including the emergence of Vila Ideal. Finally, we will emphasize what is expected from this project, the relationship of local residents with the favela, the process of favela removal in the lives of the present population, and the alienation of the workers who are carrying out the construction work in the area. In many cases, it is the residents themselves who are collaborating in the construction work but do not recognize themselves in this labor. In this case, the contractors who carry out the work in general in the area are the very residents who live or have lived there, as stated by the interviewees from this area.
